Major flooding across NSW: We are on standby

Severe weather has caused major flooding in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, over the past few days, and has led to the spillage of Sydney’s Warragamba Dam. 

The rainfall has resulted in more than 100 flood rescues and thousands of calls for help. The ferocity of the deluge has resulted in some areas being declared as disaster zones by the government. 

Since the heavy rain and floods began, our team has been actively engaged with our partners and government agencies to assess critical needs and provide assistance where it is needed most. We are focused on providing vital support to repair or rebuild enclosures and emergency resources to impacted groups. 

As the floodwaters begin to recede, further assessments will be undertaken to understand the extent of damage and impact on wildlife. We know from experience that recovery can be a long process — which is why we continue to help people and animals long after the immediate disaster response while also helping them prepare for future disasters.   

We are committed to assisting wildlife groups and carers as the floodwaters subside and we remain ready to assist as we begin to see the true impact on animals. During the floods of March 2022 in Australia, we were able to take immediate action to assist wildlife. Disasters like these are growing in frequency and severity due to the effects of climate change.
