IFAW supported SOS Dolfijn financially for the period 2017 to 2020. The collaboration now focuses mainly on the exchange of knowledge and experience in assisting with the rescue of marine mammals.
SOS Dolfijn helps cetaceans in the North Sea.
Problem
Discarded plastic, invasive fishing gear, and harmful ocean noises pose constant threats to the whales, dolphins, and harbour porpoises in the North Sea.
All along the coasts of the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and northern France, marine mammals wash ashore, isolated and unable to return to the water.
One by one, the North Sea loses a life, and a delicate ecosystem comes under threat.
Solution
SOS Dolfijn is a Dutch whale rescue organization, training volunteers and coordinating efforts to save stranded marine mammals at a moment’s notice. IFAW supported SOS Dolfijn financially for the period 2017 to 2020. This allowed for education and other activities to continue and enabled the organization to look for a new location for the rehabilitation and education center. Eventually, SOS Dolfijn found a place on Landgoed Hoenderdaell, where the new center will be opened in 2022.
