WOLF: film screening at the European Parliament

Yesterday evening, IFAW and MEP Michal Wiezik (Renew Europe) organized a screening of the documentary film Wolf at the European Parliament, in Brussels, in presence of the film Director Cees van Kempen. About 100 people, including several MEPs and officials of the European Commission, attended the screening and participated in a lively debate with Mr van Kempen.

In a political context in which the return of the wolf to regions in Europe where it had been absent for decades or more remains a highly controversial issue, the documentary - to which IFAW contributed by providing advice on animal welfare and financial support- presents the crucial role of the apex predator in preserving our biodiversity.

The combination of the films’ intimate images and the information shared by Mr van Kempen during the debate, provided a fascinating insight into the life of the top predator.

Catherine Bearder says: “IFAW works closely with governments and communities across the world to improve coexistence with wildlife. For instance, in Africa, where rural communities share space and limited resources with large carnivores and elephants, we work through IFAW’s Room to Roam initiative to open new opportunities for local communities to enhance their well-being and co-exist with wildlife in important regional strongholds of biodiversity. Our experience demonstrates that wild animals and communities can not only coexist but thrive.”

MEP Wiezik says: "It was an honor for me to have the director Cees Van Kempen and to watch the documentary, even more so that I could share the story of Wolf with so many people interested. The story of wolf is a joyful one, full of coherence and tolerance to fellow wolf packs. It is my aim to pass this message and I would be most happy if the politicians followed this great example of tolerance and respect to our dearest apex predator."
