IFAW rushes aid to communities impacted by Mount Merapi eruption in Indonesia

Around noon on 11 March 2023, Mount Merapi in Indonesia erupted, hurling ashes and toxic gas seven kilometers into the air. Local communities are struggling to find fresh grass for their animals, as most of the ground is covered with a thick layer of ash. 

IFAW has issued an emergency grant to supply fresh grass for animals and veterinary care for those in need of medical treatment. 

Meanwhile our partner, Centre for Orangutan Protection, has been busy assessing the situation on the ground and coordinating relief efforts.  

Indonesia sits within the Pacific Ring of Fire and is home to more volcanoes than any other country. Mount Merapi last erupted in 2010, killing over 200 people.
