Alleta Nyahuye
Alleta Nyahuye’s profound understanding of the daunting environmental and conservation challenges—namely climate-change-induced droughts and habitat loss—gained through hands-on field experience and research has led her to dedicate her professional career to help reduce the human footprint on nature and to promote environmentally-safe economic activities.
Having previously served as Zimbabwe’s focal point for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification, the Ramsar Convention on wise use of wetlands and the programme leader for a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) climate adaptation project, Alleta honed her skills in the advocacy and policy spheres by being involved in negotiations at the global, national, and sub-regional levels.
A firm believer in an inclusive and participatory approach to conservation, she is passionate about working closely with communities to co-create solutions and deliver impactful lasting ecological and socio-economic benefits.
Alleta brings over 15 years of experience in environment and natural resources management, having previously worked in public service with the Government of Zimbabwe and the Environmental Management Agency (EMA). She also served as the Conservation Manager of WWF Zimbabwe and Programme Manager for a UNDP Green Climate Funded (GCF) resilience project.
As IFAW’s Country Director for Zimbabwe, Alleta is responsible for overseeing and guiding staff tasked with undertaking the various programs and activities that advance IFAW’s conservation agenda, specifically the Room to Roam initiative in the priority anchor landscape. She also serves as IFAW’s front-line representative with the Government of Zimbabwe, diplomatic missions, local communities, and other NGOs to advance the organisation’s overall mission and priorities in the country.
She holds a BSc General Degree in Geography and Geology, an MSc in Integrated Water Resources Management, and a Post Graduate Diploma in Geographical Information Systems from the University of Zimbabwe.
