The National Wildlife Crime Unit (NWCU) is a specialist unit dedicated to tackling wildlife crime and plays a vital role in enforcing wildlife law, both in the UK and globally.

Since its inception in 2006, the NWCU has never received permanent funding. Unlike other specialist units, which are funded in full by the Home Office and the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC), the NWCU must re-apply for funding every few years to remain in operation.
